What is the zaghroutah?

The zaghroutah (sometimes spelled zaghrouta, zaghroota or zagroota) is a form of ululation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ululation) that is practiced by women across Egypt, the Middle East, the Gulf, as well as countries throughout the African Sub-Continent.

The sound is a unique representation of immense joy, and is usually performed at weddings, ordinations, festivals (both secular and religious), and other celebrations.

At Zaghroutah.com we invite you to explore and contribute to the definitive repository and reference of regional and/or ethnic variations of zaghareet recordings.
